The Pharmaceutical Industry
The pharmaceutical industry in the UK employs almost 70 000 people including around 30 000 in research and development. Interestingly the pharmaceutical industries carries out more research than any other industry sector in the United Kingdom.
With one third of the population suffering from chronic or long term illness rising to 70% in people over 70, it is not surprising that the industry is so vast and makes a substantial contribution to the British economy and more importantly brings major health benefits to the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. Most prescription medicines are designed, tested and manufactured by pharmaceutical companies, Biotech’s and CRO’s (Clinical Research Organisations).
